The Black Country is a place where 1.2 million people live in nearly 500,000 homes on about 138 square miles of land. Heavy industry grew up in the area thanks to the abundance of local deposits of coal and iron ore, resulting in high levels of smoke pollution, population-wide ill health – and the region’s iconic name.

These days, the name refers collectively to the four local council areas of Dudley, Sandwell, Walsall and Wolverhampton.

While manufacturing has survived into the modern age, it is on a much lesser scale. There’s now a wider variety of employment available, including in the tourism industry.

The region is vibrant and multi-cultural, with diverse communities. The impact of COVID-19 was worse among people from ethnic minority backgrounds, exacerbating inequalities.

The Black Country is the second most deprived ICS in the country. Each of our four local council areas has more people than the England average living in the country’s 20% of most deprived neighbourhoods. Around half of our population lives in areas with the highest level of deprivation. This has driven poor health outcomes in terms of life expectancy and healthy life expectancy.
